A lot of people in Gaza have died in recent months, after their requests to access treatment in Israel and the West Bank were denied.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Munir is dead. He had cancer. He died after not being able to get his medicine for four months. When his condition deteriorated, he had to wait weeks or months to leave the Gaza Strip, to reach the Tel Hashomer hospital near Tel Aviv. Maybe he would have died anyway. He had cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

We met Munir through Mohammed, my partner Osama\u2019s younger and charming brother, who still lives in the family home in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. In February, we received orders from Mohammed to visit Munir in the new Istishari hospital outside Ramallah. One evening, Munir even came to our house for dinner and played with our kids, in his quiet and dignified way. When he went back to Gaza, he brought back the presents we had piled on him, for Osama\u2019s mother, nieces and nephews, whom we can\u2019t see because of the travel restrictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In April, Munir called Osama to ask if he knew someone traveling to Gaza. Munir needed a drug from the hospital in the West Bank. We also happened to be looking for a delivery-person to Gaza \u2013 someone who would bring Mohammed\u2019s son, who has a rare disease called thalassemia, an infusion pump that an Israeli medical supply company had donated. The coronavirus pandemic was still new, and I was busy dealing with the closure of day care and kindergarten and the difficulty of working with the children home. I sent a few emails that yielded no result and let the issue slip my mind. Under the guise of the coronavirus pandemic, Israel had tightened the criteria<\/a> for travel into and out of Gaza, and the Hamas government in Gaza had imposed a three-week institutional quarantine requirement on everyone entering Gaza. I couldn\u2019t find anyone to bring the packages.<\/p>\n

And then, two weeks ago, we found our delivery-person \u2013 Munir himself. Over the last few months, the Israeli authorities allowed medical patients to leave Gaza for treatment in Israel or the West Bank only in the most urgent cases,<\/a> but Munir\u2019s condition had deteriorated sufficiently to make him eligible for a permit.<\/p>\n

I drove to Tel Aviv to collect the infusion pump from a colleague who had stored it for me. \u201cBut it\u2019s expired,\u201d she warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s OK,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s mechanical equipment, it\u2019s not like a carton of milk.\u201d<\/p>\n

The truth is, I know nothing about the shelf life of the pump or the infusion sets that were also donated. I know that they sell for thousands of shekels \u2013 that\u2019s what it cost when we bought similar items for Mohammed in the past. I assume that Israel\u2019s national health insurance would have covered the cost, had it been for an Israeli child. But Osama\u2019s nephew, the grandson of refugees from Ashkelon, is not eligible for Israeli health insurance, and the Palestinian Ministry of Health doesn\u2019t cover the cost.
I brought the equipment to Tel Hashomer hospital, where Munir was hospitalized alone, while his wife and four children stayed behind in Gaza. I intended to visit with him, but Internal Medicine Ward 9 was closed to visitors due to the coronavirus pandemic. I stood outside the locked door and called Munir. He apologized and said he couldn\u2019t come to meet me, but after\u00a0the guard objected to bringing the equipment inside, Munir came out to the hallway.<\/p>\n

Munir is a handsome man, 52 years old, with delicate facial features and salt-and-pepper hair. Uncharacteristically, he had left his\u00a0hospital pajama top half open. Tubes protruded from his shirt, connected to bags of liquid hanging from a stand that he pushed on wheels. He was thin but not worryingly thin. His voice and smile were weak. He thanked me for the things that Osama had persuaded him to request from us \u2013 toothpaste, razor blades, shampoo and dates \u2013 and promised to bring the infusion pump to our nephew.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is from Mohammed, for the little ones,\u201d he said and handed me a bag of presents.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe next time I come, we\u2019ll have coffee together,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod willing,\u201d he said and added, using the Hebrew that he\u00a0had been exposed to in the hospital, \u201cBiseder.\u201d OK.<\/i><\/p>\n

As I walked back to the car, Osama called.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s sick, Osama,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like his last visit. Maybe I can come back in a few days. If he feels better, he can sit outside in the hallway with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next day, as the children played with the presents that Mohammed had sent \u2013 two sets of Smurf dolls and colored pencils \u2013 Mohammed\u00a0called Osama.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank him for the presents,\u201d I called to Osama, but he hushed me with a wave of his hand and took the phone outside. A few minutes later he came back, his face stony.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about …\u201d He didn\u2019t finish the sentence but instead drew me toward him into a hug. I pushed him away and looked into his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me,\u201d I said. Osama didn\u2019t answer. \u201cMunir?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Osama didn\u2019t answer. \u201cDid he die?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, sweetheart,\u201d Osama said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d I screamed, and this time I didn\u2019t push Osama away as\u00a0he pulled me close.<\/p>\n

Our daughter Forat yelled from the children\u2019s room: \u201cWhat happened, Ima?\u201d \u00a0Her brother Adam repeated her words: \u201cWhat happened, Ima?\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled myself together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday. Mohammed saw a post on his daughter\u2019s Facebook page. He\u2019s trying to call, but she\u2019s not answering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I saw him yesterday. He asked for dates. He had an appetite.\u201d<\/p>\n

I called the hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not allowed to disclose medical information over the\u00a0phone,\u201d said the nurse from Internal Medicine Ward 9, \u201cbut \u2013 the truth is, I also took it hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe couldn\u2019t get his medicine for four months,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I know,\u201d she said. \u201cHe arrived at an advanced stage.\u00a0We knew it would happen.\u201d I thanked her for treating him and felt grateful for\u00a0the respect with which she spoke about him.<\/p>\n

\u201cMay his memory be a blessing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the last few months, a lot of medical patients from Gaza have died<\/a>, after their requests for permits from the Israeli military to access treatment in Israel or the West Bank were denied or went unanswered<\/a>. Maybe they would have died anyway. They were sick.\u00a0<\/p>\n
