I enjoyed cultivating the Tooth Fairy as a heroine. Forat deals with so many grown-up issues \u2013 I wanted her to retain some childhood magic.<\/em><\/p>\n

The truth about the Tooth Fairy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Forat, aged seven, was reading a book. After a difficult adjustment to the educational system in North Carolina, our temporary home for my partner Osama\u2019s sabbatical year, her English reading has flourished. Every Sunday we visit the public library and return home with a stack of books about fairies and mermaids, which she devours during the week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIma, are fairies real?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot really,\u201d I said and chopped lettuce for a salad.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. But I think they exist only in books.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about the Tooth Fairy?\u201d she asked, and she used her finger to wiggle her loose tooth.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s an interesting question,\u201d I said, and I didn\u2019t expand. It wasn\u2019t the first time that Forat expressed an interest in learning the truth about the Tooth Fairy. Each time, she had accepted evasive answers, perhaps out of a desire to avoid a r thorough an investigation of the issue. But this time she insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat, Ima?\u201d Forat asked, and her voice became increasingly high-pitched. \u201cHow can fairies not be real, if the Tooth Fairy brings me presents?\u201d I turned my back to chop tomatoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIma!\u201d<\/p>\n

I made eye contact with her. I thought about the nights when Forat hid her tooth under the pillow, flooded with anticipation of a visit by the Fairy, engaging me in long discussions about the logistics of her gift delivery system. I believe in being honest with Forat and her little brother Adam, but when it came to baby teeth falling out, I adjusted the truth to make it appropriate for her age, an age in which the line between reality and imagination is still blurred. I enjoyed cultivating the image of the Tooth Fairy as a strong, sly and generous female heroine. Forat has to deal with so many grown-up issues<\/a> <\/span>\u2013 I wanted to preserve a space in which she could continue to cling to the magic of childhood. But she was looking at me with suspicion and worry. I felt ashamed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you really want to know?\u201d I asked her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Tooth Fairy is not real,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen who brings me the presents? Who takes the teeth?\u201d<\/p>\n

I pointed to myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart, I though that you \u2013\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!! No!!\u201d<\/p>\n

She threw her plate on the floor, screamed and banged on the table. I tried to embrace her but she pushed me away and burst into tears. Osama entered the room, and she allowed him to hug her.<\/p>\n

Forat will soon celebrate her eighth birthday. She will take one more step toward late, clear-eyed childhood, when she will have to learn to decipher the world and expose herself to its disappointments. I felt sorrow for her pain and for the loss of our sweet moments together, on selected mornings, when she would jump out of her bed, her face radiant and laughing, and proudly show me the note that the Tooth Fairy had written to her.<\/p>\n

A girl who understands girls\u2019 issues<\/strong><\/p>\n

After dinner, I sat with Osama in the living room. Four year-old Adam was playing a game in which he ran from corner to corner, dressed in a Spiderman cape, and charged at the lions hiding under the armchairs. Osama and I were talking about a report that a colleague of mine had written about the closure of girls\u2019 schools in Afghanistan because of the Taliban seizing power there, an issue of concern to the human rights organization where I work.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart aches for them,\u201d Osama said. \u201cThey\u2019re stuck between foreign occupation and local oppression.\u201d<\/p>\n

As usual, Forat listened to the conversation and periodically interrupted to ask me to translate into Hebrew everything I said to Osama, with whom I speak in English. Forat understands English perfectly, but that\u2019s her way to ask me to make grown-up subjects accessible to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t they let girls go to school?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a new government, and they made bad rules,\u201d I told her.<\/p>\n

Forat nodded and touched her loose tooth, trying to dislodge it from her gum.<\/p>\n

\u201cIma, if my tooth falls out today, I want you to buy me a yo-yo,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd also chewing gum, but not mint-flavored. Strawberry or watermelon.\u201d Her disappointment over discovering the truth about the Tooth Fairy had morphed into excitement over the possibility of ordering the presents she wanted directly from me.<\/p>\n

\u201cForat, your tooth is not allowed to fall out tonight,\u201d I said. \u201cThe shops are closed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOK,\u201d she said, and then, in an abrupt transition, she added: \u201cIma, is it better to have good rules, but to force them on the people, or is it better to have freedom but bad rules?\u201d<\/p>\n

Osama and I looked at her, shocked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you talking about, sweetheart?\u201d I asked her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you and Baba said, about the girls they won\u2019t allow in school. I think that people don\u2019t want to have rules pushed on them \u2013 but bad rules aren\u2019t really freedom either,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

I sat next to her on the floor and drew her close to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know that you\u2019re becoming a really big girl?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d she said, and suddenly broke free from my embrace, stuck her finger in her mouth\u00a0 and cried out in joy: \u201cMy tooth fell out!\u201d<\/p>\n
