I\u2019m trying to keep my kids safe. But in Palestinian areas there are no shelters, and my adolescent daughter refuses to hide in the closet. <\/em><\/p>\n

As is true for many Israeli parents, my main challenge since the start of the war between Israel and Iran has been keeping my children safe\u2014both physically and emotionally. But in our family, there\u2019s an added complexity: I\u2019m a Jewish Israeli, my partner is a Palestinian from the Gaza Strip, and we\u2019re raising our two children in the Ramallah\u2013al-Bireh area of the occupied West Bank. In Palestinian areas of the West Bank, unlike in Jewish settlements, there are no bomb shelters and no sirens to warn of incoming missiles.<\/p>\n

For the last year and a half, since Houthi drones and Hezbollah missiles aimed at Israel started nearing the West Bank, I tried to force my children to take shelter in our walk-in closet. My seven-year-old son Adam complies. His eleven-year-old sister, Forat, on the other hand, views the Iranian threat as yet another arena where she can assert her independence and distinguish herself from me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stuffed Animals in the Closet<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Friday morning, hours after the Israeli attack, I hurried to the supermarket to buy basic supplies: chips, peanuts, and juice boxes, our kids\u2019 menu for closet meals. When I got home, Adam was already sitting at the kitchen table, his hair tousled and his face sleepy. I kissed him and sat beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you remember the game we play in the closet, the one that\u2019s not really a game?\u201d I asked him.<\/p>\n

There are no sirens where we live, but an app in my telephone alerts me when sirens sound in the three nearest Jewish settlements. If a missile could fall on them, it could fall on us, too. During alerts, we enter our windowless walk-in closet, which is about a meter by a meter and a half in size. Our apartment is built into a hillside\u2014one side faces the garden, and the other is underground.<\/p>\n

Adam\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cWhen we all go into the closet? Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

I moved my chair closer. \u201cLast night, the Israeli army attacked a faraway place called Iran. Today, Iran will send missiles here. They won\u2019t come near us, but we want to be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are missiles?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSawarikh,\u201d I said in Arabic.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan Cheetah and Snake-y come into the closet too?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever you want,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll get the closet ready. By myself. Don\u2019t help me, Ima!\u201d He ran to his room and started gathering his stuffed animals.<\/p>\n

When Forat woke up, I didn\u2019t dare approach her. I\u2019m her Jewish, non-Palestinian mother, who speaks clumsy Arabic with a heavy accent, limits her sugar intake, makes her wear a seatbelt in the car, doesn\u2019t understand anything and generally is ruining her life. My partner Osama and I agreed that he would talk to her about the war and the closet\u2014Palestinian to Palestinian.<\/p>\n

He approached her gently. Together they examined her globe, checking where Iran was and where we are.<\/p>\n

All day long, every two hours, Adam pestered me: \u201cIma, when are we going to play the closet game?\u201d I registered that as an early parenting win\u2014he couldn\u2019t wait for the Iranian strike to begin so could play cards and eat Doritos with us in the closet.<\/p>\n

Prayer Will Save Our Lives<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 4 p.m., my phone sounded an alert\u2014sirens in the nearby settlements. Adam ran to me, my phone in his hand: \u201cNow do we go into the closet?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cOsama! Forat! We\u2019re going to the closet!\u201d<\/p>\n

Forat emerged from her room, hands on her hips. \u201cI\u2019m staying with Baba,\u201d she declared. \u201cWherever Baba goes, I go.\u201d She was banking on Osama\u2019s principled stance\u2014that the order to run into shelters is Zionist propaganda intended to intensify fear and tribalism within Israeli society. He also feels that taking shelter in the face of a remote threat is an unjustified privilege, compared to his siblings, nieces and nephews in Gaza who have faced a much deadlier threat for the last 20 months without any means of protection. I don\u2019t disagree with his analysis, but I believe in the laws of physics.<\/p>\n

That morning, he agreed that Iranian missiles are much more powerful than the bombs launched by the Houthis or Hezbollah and that for the children\u2019s sake, he would join us in the closet\u2014at least for now.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Forat,\u201d Osama said, placing a hand on her shoulder. \u201cLet\u2019s join Ima and Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was cramped in the closet. Adam climbed up the shelves and opened a pack of corn puffs, pleased.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat else is there to eat?\u201d Forat asked me.<\/p>\n

\u201cPringles,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what else?\u201d Her gaze was sharp.<\/p>\n

\u201cMixed nuts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what else?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Doritos are in the kitchen. I\u2019ll bring them next time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll go get them,\u201d she said and stepped toward the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d I said, placing my body between her and the door. In doing so, I inadvertently pushed Osama, and he gave me a withering look. Forat threw Adam\u2019s cheetah doll at the door. There were loud booms on other side of the door\u2014probably interceptions\u2014but Forat didn\u2019t hear them because she was busy yelling at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m bored,\u201d she screamed. \u201cNo one else in Ramallah is hiding in a closet!\u201d Osama gestured for me to let him respond, but I couldn\u2019t help myself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen big things fall from the sky, you move away from windows and take cover!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re so worried, instead of going into the closet, I\u2019ll pray,\u201d she retorted. As part of her rebellion against her secular parents\u2014mainly me\u2014she had recently started reciting the Quran and saying \u201cBismillah\u201d (In Arabic, \u201cIn the name of God, the merciful, the compassionate\u201d) before every bite of food.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know how to pray,\u201d I reminded her. \u201cWe never taught you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate you!\u201d Forat yelled. \u201cYou ruined my life!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re 18, you can go outside, stand underneath a barrage of missiles, and pray,\u201d I promised her. \u201cUntil then, you stay with me in the closet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Control Games<\/strong><\/p>\n

Days passed, and Adam\u2019s anxiety increased. He began asking questions about death and played games where he ordered me around and I had to obey. I saw these games as a healthy way for him to regain a sense of control, so I played along. He covered me with a blanket and ordered me to sleep. I slept. He pulled the blanket off and told me to wake up. I woke up. He made me chase him through the house until he yelled \u201cFreeze!\u201d and I stopped in place. He commanded \u201cUn-freeze,\u201d and I resumed the chase. In this way, he gave himself an opportunity to create and neutralize threats.<\/p>\n

Two days into the Israel\u2013Iran war, Adam lay in our bed in the middle of the day. I lay down beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s up?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He smiled a wide smile. \u201cYou\u2019re my shield,\u201d he said. \u201cIf someone tries to shoot me, you\u2019ll protect me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hugged him and aligned my body with his small frame. I told him the lies that we parents tell our children when we don\u2019t want to admit that the world is dangerous and beyond our control.<\/p>\n
